Bad Mitterndorf has around 3,000 inhabitants and is only about 16 km (10 miles) from the geographical centre of Austria.
This means that is about 95 km from Salzburg, approx. 140 km from Linz, and about the same distance from Graz. It was one of the first-ever skiing villages in Austria, back in the days when you had to climb the mountain first before you could whiz down it on your skis! Today Bad Mitterndorf has visitors from around the world who are attracted by its facilities for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and also by its relaxed and original atmosphere. The village lies at an altitude of 810 metres above sea level and is one of the two main places to stay for skiers wishing to enjoy the Tauplitzalm ski area. (For those who haven't heard of Tauplitzalm before, it's famous within Austria as being a snow-sure area - when many other Alpine resorts are crying out for snow, it's here aplenty!) But Bad Mitterndorf is more than just a winter sports resort - in summer it's a paradise for hiking and Nordic walking, for mountain biking and bike touring, or for just relaxing and enjoying our pure fresh mountain air. Being in the Salzkammergut (the Austrian Lake District), you can easily make an excursion to one of the many beautiful crystal-clear lakes for swimming, windsurfing, sailing, or a trip on the lake steamer on some of the larger lakes.
