A village festival, or Dorffest, takes place at frequent intervals from May to October in Bad Mitterndorf and other villages throughout the surrounding Ausseerland region. An Austrian-style village festival is a sort of mini-Oktoberfest combining good food, great live traditional music, a wonderful friendly atmosphere, a street market, and sometimes also entertainment for the kids in the form of a small funfair. The fun usually starts mid-morning and goes on well into the wee, small hours. Some of the larger festivals last for 2-3 days!! At each Dorffest you can sample the excellent Austrian wines, beers, and schnapps, and also enjoy a hearty plateful of the Austrian version of fast food – grilled chicken, sausages, or pork chops, with salad and/or French fries. Many locals turn out in their “Sunday-best” – the ladies and girls in their colourful Trachten dresses and the men and boys in their Lederhosen. The Ausseerland is renowned as the musical homeland of Austria and when you hear the crowd singing along with the music, you will understand why.
