Here are details of a selection of the skiing areas in and around Bad Mitterndorf. All of the areas listed below are less than 45 minutes’ drive from our front door.
Tauplitzalm (810 – 1965 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 40 km Number of lifts : 16 This is our “home” skiing area, with regular ski-buses from the village up to the Alm. Tauplitzalm was one of the first-ever skiing resorts in Austria, founded in 1905. It’s a beautiful, natural area, mostly above the tree line, and is well-known within Austria as a snow-sure area, even in the mildest of winters. With 16 lifts and about 40 km of prepared slopes, it offers great variety and is suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers. There is also a special area for boarders with jumps, etc. Website : www.dietauplitz.com Hauser-Kaibling (728 – 2015 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 37 km Number of lifts : 11 This is the closest point to Bad Mitterndorf where you can enter into the Schladming ski arena that encompasses 4 separate mountains. It has the most modern cable-car in Austria. Loser (800 – 1800 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 29 km Number of lifts : 8 The Loser mountain is located near the village of Altaussee. The slopes here are ideally suited to both beginners and intermediate skiers. There is also a fun-park for boarders on the Sandling piste. Website : http://www.loser.at/winter/sites_e/the_loser.html Planneralm (1600 – 2200 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 15 km Number of lifts : 5 This skiing area is the highest lying ski resort in the province of Styria (Steiermark) with guaranteed snow from December to mid-April. It’s a great little skiing area – a sort of hidden gem. Website : http://winter.planneralm.at/rtc-planneralm/191 Riesneralm (980 – 1990 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 25 km Number of lifts : 3 This skiing area was recently awarded the International Piste Seal of Quality. In addition to the downhill slopes, there are 18 km of cross-country skiing trails and a 6 km long natural tobogganing run. Website : http://www.riesneralm.at/index.html Schladming (Planai) (745 – 1894 metres) Total length of prepared pistes : 32 km Number of lifts : 14 Schladming is the largest skiing resort in Styria and is world-famous. The skiing is divided among several different mountains, one of which is the Planai. This mountain has hosted numerous international competitions including World Championship racing – it is suitable for all levels of skiers, including advanced.
